Alastor had been right about one thing—Martie’s strength had improved with rest and sustenance.

After they had supped, Alastor made careful examination of Nicholas, and then dosed his patient with Alkelixir.

As she watched him, Martie mentally reviewed her experiences on the astral plane, piecing together the disturbing details: the archetypal journey across the bridge, Metatron standing guard over his towers, examining her, and presenting her with the key—and then the horrific encounter with Sammael.

The latter encounter disturbed her most. How had Sammael almost succeeded in convincing her to join his cause? What had he meant, that she had nearly been delivered to “his master” once before? This is what she wanted to ask Alastor—and yet she feared to speak of it. She had nearly gone over to the darkness. If she told him, he would comprehend her weakness. He would see it in her eyes.

Her mind had locked onto this thought loop, and would not let go. When Alastor joined her at the table once more, he seemed to be expecting her to speak. The need to tell him the truth about her identity lay heavy upon her conscience. If there was a time to do it, it was now.

Yet she could not. The fire was cozy and her stomach was full. She wanted to forget about Sammael and untenable truths—just for a while. Could postponing that inevitable discussion a little longer really be so bad?

Maybe she could work up to it by getting him to talk about himself. If she quizzed Alastor about his life, maybe she could forget about hers.

“Now that we’ve…” What? Slept together? Had sex? Awkward! She chose to not finish that sentence, trusting he would understand. “Can I ask you about… yourself?” She cringed at her own words.

His expression clouded. Yet his voice held the familiar irony. “Only if I may do the same, in my turn.” His eyes pierced hers.

Martie met his gaze. He knew she was lying about her identity. “Yes,” she said unequivocally. “You shall have your turn.”

He nodded his assent. “Very well. Proceed.”

“Okay, um… you told me I’m a wizard by blood, which I never knew my whole life.” She tilted her head. “How did you find out, you know, about yourself?”

“Fair enough.” He paused, as if pondering where to start. “Have you ever heard of the Comte de Saint-Germain?”

A shiver ran over her arms. While researching her dissertation, she had devoted hours to reading the famous magician’s texts. “The name is familiar.”

Alastor steepled his fingers, and gazed at her pointedly. “He tutored my grandfather in the Hermetic arts. In turn, my grandfather taught me.”

Wait… the math did not add up. Saint-Germain died in the 1780s. No way could he have tutored Alastor’s grandfather. “Don’t you mean your great-grandfather?”

“I meant grandfather. Let’s just say that longevity runs in my family.”

Longevity runs in the family? Martie’s heart skipped a beat. This was it. This was what she was after. The Philosopher’s Stone.

“My grandfather grew up in Ostfriesland.” His accent turned into mix of German and English when he spoke the word.
